Literary Arts

Throughout its long history, Mitchell has a rich tradition of celebrating the literary arts in Iredell County. On the campus and in the community, we aspire to support writing and encourage writers, to inspire expression and encourage new ideas, and to engage readers and encourage reading. 

To achieve these aims, each year the College hosts the Doris Betts Spring Writers Festival, which presents acclaimed poets, novelists, and non-fiction writers from the region and beyond. Festival activities include author readings, writing workshops, book signings and social events. 

We also invite the campus and community to attend poetry readings and to participate in spoken word performances. In addition to publishing several student literary magazines annually, Mitchell offers both credit and non-credit creative writing classes. We hope that you will be inspired to write your own stories and poems; that you will engage with great works of literature; and that you will express yourself creatively through the literary arts at Mitchell. 

A full schedule of literary arts events is published each September. Creative writing courses are offered each semester in our Continuing Education and College-Credit divisions.
