Stories of Excellence - Joseph Brown

The words “I can’t” are not in Joseph Brown’s dictionary. Despite a progressive disease affecting his speech and movement, Brown is determined to reach his goals. Mitchell is just one of the many reasons Brown says “I can.”

Earning his Associate of Arts degree from Mitchell in 2014 opened the door for Brown to continue his studies, a goal he had not thought possible in high school. “Mitchell was a second chance for me,” Brown stated, “Mitchell helped me to understand I can do anything I set my mind to.” Brown enrolled at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in fall 2014 pursuing an undergraduate business degree. His determination and the help of his peers, professors and staff made his college experience (and the experiences of all who interacted with him) extraordinary. Studying abroad in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and completing the UNC graduation tradition of ascending the bell tower are just two examples of Brown’s amazing journey. In June 2016, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School.

Brown noted he would highly recommend Mitchell to any high school student. More personal relationships and cost savings are just a few of the reasons Brown believes community college is “the best way to do a freshman and sophomore year of an undergraduate degree.” Brown’s journey in education is not over—he plans to attend Western Carolina University this fall to pursue a master’s degree in sport management.

“I would not be where I am today if not for Mitchell,” Brown noted.
