Stories of Excellence - Kristen Milstead

Excellence sometimes comes in the honor of a once in a lifetime experience. Mitchell student Kristen Milstead knows this honor. She will be representing Team USA in the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2017 in Austria.

Milstead, who has been involved with Special Olympics for 16 years, was chosen to compete in Alpine skiing. She will be training with Team USA in Vermont later this month. An Adult Basic Education (ABE) student at Mitchell, Milstead will be one of two Olympians from North Carolina–the other athlete is from High Point. “It will be an experience of my life,” Milstead said, bubbling over with excitement.

Instructor Sara Lanier shares Milstead’s excitement. “We are so very proud of Kristen,” she said “Kristen brings such joy to our classroom and teaches us something new every day. We will be cheering her on this March!” Milstead said she is most looking forward to seeing another country and is thankful her family will be with her to experience the adventure. She hopes to make new friends at the Games as well.

Special Olympics is a world-wide sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. More than 4.7 million Special Olympics athletes represent 169 countries around the globe. The organization strives to build a global community, providing an inclusive environment where athletes can find success, friendship and confidence, regardless of ability level. Iredell County alone has 350 registered Special Olympics athletes. The Special Olympics World Games occur every two years, alternating between Summer and Winter Games. The 2017 World Winter Games will be held March 14–25, 2017.

Best of luck, Kristen Milstead! We cannot wait to hear about your experience! You truly represent excellence at Mitchell!
