Mitchell students nominated for honor
Mitchell students Rachel Bryan (Statesville) and Brittany Whitaker (Mooresville) have been selected as the top nominees for the All-USA Community College Academic Team from Mitchell Community College. The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence along with leadership and service. Twenty national team members are selected annually in March with each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. Both Mitchell students’ scholarship applications will be placed in the national pool for this coveted honor.
Rachel Bryan (pictured above, right) is a Criminal Justice student planning to transfer to Gardner-Webb University or Lees-McRae College to pursue a bachelor’s degree after graduation in spring 2017. Bryan’s long-term goal is to be a probation officer. Her passion for criminal justice stems from a desire to help others, and taking the program’s introductory courses at Mitchell helped Bryan focus her goals. “If you educate your community,” Bryan noted, “I believe you can go out and really make a difference.”
Brittany Whitaker(pictured above, left) is an Associate in Science student planning to graduate in spring 2017. She aims to transfer to UNC-Charlotte or University of South Carolina to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biology or exercise science. Whitaker’s goal is to continue on to be a physician’s assistant, combining her strengths of math and science and her passion of helping people. Mitchell student life and activities she noted, have provided an engaging balance for her studies.
