The Mitchell Community College Endowment for Excellence announced the creation of a new endowed scholarship in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Davidson Raymer. The donations totaling over $31,000 were given by family and friends to honor the Raymer’s long-time commitment to Mitchell.
Ray Davidson Raymer and Margaret Joyce Saunders Raymer were both born in Iredell County. They attended Mitchell College where, despite previously being acquainted with one another and each other’s families, their friendship and lifelong relationship truly began.
While at Mitchell, Joyce pursued her love of music. She was named May Queen and played on the women’s basketball team. After serving in World War II, Ray, better known as “Tootie”, attended Mitchell. He drove the bus for the woman’s basketball team which helped foster his friendship with Joyce. Together, Ray and Joyce raised five children. Their children always recall hearing them talk fondly of their time at Mitchell where they fell in love and developed lifelong friendships.
