Auxiliary
Aids and/or Services
In order to facilitate requests for auxiliary aids and/or
services (including hiring qualified service providers),
it is necessary for students to be registered with the Coordinator
of Special Populations & Disability Services. To help
ensure the availability of services, requests should be made
in a timely manner.
Following are examples of accommodations,
auxiliary aids and/or services. The list is not exhaustive
and the time
frames are recommended ones.
Note-takers are used for students with disabilities who
express a need for notes taken by another individual. Note-takers
are student volunteers, generally identified with the assistance
of the instructor in whose class the student is enrolled.
Once the note-taker has been identified, a meeting is set
up with the student volunteer regarding expectations. Volunteers
are given a brochure outlining specific duties. Paper is
available for those students who would prefer not to use
their personal notebook paper.
Interpreter Services are used
for students who are deaf. If a student needs an interpreter,
he/she must register with
the coordinator as soon as possible, preferably at least
two weeks prior to the beginning of class.
Textbooks on Tape are available through Recordings for
the Blind and Dyslexic (RFB&D). For more information, visit
RFB&D’s web site at www.rfbd.org or call 1-800/222-4792.
Ideally, books on tape should be requested at least 4 weeks
prior to the beginning of each semester. For your convenience,
the disabilities coordinator may also have RFB&D applications
for individual memberships.
Reader Services are offered for students who are blind
or visually impaired. If a student needs a reader, he/she
must
register with the coordinator as soon as possible, preferably
at least two weeks prior to the beginning of class.
Tutorial Services are offered to all students enrolled
at Mitchell Community College. The Coordinator of Special
Populations & Disability
Services works with the Coordinator of the MIND Center to
provide tutoring for student's individual needs.
Examinations and Paper Accommodations are generally requested
during the development of the accommodation plan. It is best
that the student and/or instructor contact the coordinator
at least twenty-four hours in advance for private testing.
If the student requires the use of the computer or scribe
with which to take the exam, he/she should request such services
at least seven days prior to the date the service is needed.

Populations & Disability Services. Currently, the following
assistive technology is available.
JAWS – PC screen reading software
Dragon Dictate – Speech input software. Available
for use in disability services office.
Sewell Raised Line Drawing System
