Stories of Excellence–Chelsea Conklin
Chelsea Conklin believes in opportunity. Whether in the classroom, after graduation or in the field, Conklin knows each opportunity is a chance to not only learn and grow as a person, but a chance to help others and improve one’s community.
Conklin began taking classes at Mitchell in 2012, focusing her studies in business administration. She excelled in her coursework and was honored with Marketing Student of the Year in 2015 and Business Student Leadership Award in 2016. As a part of an internship in spring of 2016, Conklin planned and executed a spring fling for a local golf course, gaining valuable knowledge and experience. “There is such a huge benefit to having additional hands-on learning than just classroom time,” Conklin noted. This experiential learning, combined with receiving advice and mentoring as a part of the process, helped to provide real world skills and prepare her for future positions. “I learned different methods of achieving what I wanted to accomplish that I never would have considered,” Conklin recalled.
Conklin graduated with her associate’s degree in business administration–marketing and retail concentration in December 2016. She kept in touch with contacts and resources at Mitchell, including instructor Keith Miller. “Mr. Miller saw something in me that I didn’t see,” she noted. The support Conklin received during her time at Mitchell and as an alumna made an impact on her life and her career. “Mitchell put me in a place to have a career,” she said, “not just a short-term job.”
In the summer of 2017, this continued connection to Mitchell lead to a new opportunity–an interview for a position in Membership at the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce. She found opportunities for learning and growth in the interview process, which was dissimilar from those she had previously encountered. “I had two general interviews,” she recalled, “was asked to help with an event, and to follow along for a day.” Conklin was offered the position and has been with the Greater Statesville Chamber of Commerce for four months. Her duties include ribbon cuttings, new member management, new sponsorships and serving member needs. “My hope for myself in this position is to be here for the members,” she said. She is committed to providing the tools members need to achieve their goals, focusing on inclusion and support to promote a sense of community. “The Chamber definitely cares about our members and what WE can do for THEM. Not what they can do for us," she added. "Together we can accomplish great things and I am so happy to be a part of that.” Keith Miller noted that Conklin's position at the Chamber is a perfect fit for her. "Her personality, initiative and work ethic will fit seamlessly into their culture of leadership and enhanced quality of life. Chelsea epitomizes the success Mitchell Community College strives for in all our students." Conklin aims to continue to make connections and champion the Statesville area in order to build a better community with more opportunities for all.
