Stories of Excellence–O'Niel Seme

O’Niel Seme has a goal to be successful. In the short time he has studied at Mitchell, Seme has made an impact on his future goals. And Mitchell has made an impact on him.

Seme began taking classes at Mitchell in fall 2017 but was unsure of his educational and career goals. He enrolled in the Associate in Science transfer program. While he was considering continuing on to a four-year institution, his interests were still very broad. Seme decided to seek support to help him narrow his focus. With help from Mitchell’s Career Services Center, Seme has pinpointed his career path to physical therapy and sports medicine. He recognizes the impact this informed decision has had on his studies. He is now able to make smarter educational choices and stay on track to completing his degree and moving on to a four-year institution. “My education will help me achieve success and open doors to endless opportunities,” he noted.

As he worked through his first semester, Seme encountered the challenge of achieving the grades he wanted in his classes. Once again, he sought assistance from Mitchell and found tutoring resources, utilizing tutors in the Mind Center and UpSwing (the college’s virtual tutoring program) helped him to achieve his goal. “Since coming to Mitchell my perspective on education as a whole has changed for the better,” Seme said. He now feels better prepared as a student to excel in his remaining semesters at Mitchell and beyond.

The desire to be successful has opened many doors for Seme at Mitchell. Dr. Porter Brannon, Vice President for Student Services, recalled Seme’s response to her question early in his Mitchell studies of what he wanted to be in life. “He said he wanted to be successful,” she shared, “And I told him, ‘You came to the right place. We will give you so many opportunities to be successful!’” Beyond his time in the classroom, Seme is now a work-study student in the Career Services Center and an ambassador for Mitchell’s Minority Male Success Initiative. Both of these areas have provided Seme with a growing network of support for his personal and professional goals. “I came to Mitchell to better myself,” he noted. “The flexible academic schedule, help of staff, and patience of many teachers are providing me with the resources that I need to reach my full potential. Mitchell gives all the resources you need to achieve greatness.”
