The faculty of the Department of Art at Mitchell are working to mold new creative thinkers. While guiding you to embark on a new career or preparing you for transfer to your senior institution, Mitchell faculty will lead you in the exploration of both traditional and contemporary mediums in the visual arts.

Mitchell’s program stresses the application of aesthetic principals to enhance the creative process with the goal of making students fluent in a wide variety of media, technologies and modes of critical thinking and expression.

Through a study of art that emphasizes the past and the present, the personal and the universal, you will gain an insight into the visual arts as an essential part of the human experience. In the foundation courses, you will be prepared to develop your own creative voice while working towards becoming a leader in the field of visual arts.

Louise Gilbert Art Gallery

For more than 25 years, the Louise Gilbert Art Gallery, hosted and curated by Mitchell’s Department of Art, has played a vital role in the visual arts in Iredell County. The Gilbert Gallery serves as a vibrant space for students and visitors to explore ideas, techniques, forms and mediums. Our exhibits and installations feature award-winning local, national and international artists whose work includes traditional, folk, outsider and experimental styles.

We invite you to attend the opening reception for each Gilbert Gallery exhibit for a lively dialogue with the artists, the art work, our faculty and students, and other visitors. We hope that you will be inspired to enrich your life with the arts at Mitchell. The annual exhibit schedule is published each September.
