Mitchell students give back to veterans

Mitchell Community College’s Adult Basic Education I (ABE I) class recently took part in a service project to bring holiday cheer to local homeless veterans. Students contributed to the collection of toiletries, hats, gloves, socks and other basic necessities. On Wednesday, December 19, students packed and wrapped 15 boxes which will be delivered through Fifth Street Ministries to homeless veterans in the local community. Iredell Veteran's Services Office also partnered with the project.

“Our class tries to come up with ways to give to the community,” said ABE instructor Vicki Larsen. “Our projects create a sense of shared community and demonstrate anyone can help in a small way.” This is not the first service project the ABE I class has taken on this year. Students worked to create over 100 cards for distribution to local veterans in honor of Veterans Day. Additionally, more than 100 Christmas and holiday cards were created by the ABE I students and sent to troops serving overseas.
