Mitchell students place in multi-state math tournament 

Mitchell Community College’s Math Club recently competed in the 25th annual Math Tournament at the University of North Georgia (UNG). Erick Boniface placed second in the morning Calculus competition and the Mitchell team placed third in the afternoon group competition. Mitchell placed third in the overall competition.

 

The UNG Math Tournament competition features both individual and team events involving problems from calculus, trigonometry, geometry, statistics and algebra. The tournament is open to colleges and universities which offer an Associate of Science degree in the area of Mathematics. Students must not take any math course above sophomore-level in order to be eligible to participate. 

 

The UNG competition is split into two parts. The morning competition is based on individual scores for a calculus exam which consists of Calculus I and II problems. The afternoon competition is a group competition where teams tackle precalculus-level problems. Over 110 students who participated in the 2019 morning competition. More than 20 different schools from multiple states were represented in the afternoon competition.
