Running team raises funds for memorial scholarship

Mitchell Community College recently received a contribution to the Beverly Hedrick Memorial Continuing Education Scholarship from the “Running for Bev!” running team. The group, headed by Tanner Hedrick, son of the late Beverly Hedrick, seeks to raise funds for and awareness of causes important to Beverly.

Now with over 30 team members, “Running for Bev!” raised over $2,000 in advance of the Tar Heel 10 Miler a foot race around the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the downtown Chapel Hill area. The money has been split equally between Hospice Care of Iredell County, The Simstein Memorial Fund and the Beverly Hedrick Memorial Continuing Education Scholarship. The team hopes to continue raising funds as a part of future races. Beverly Hedrick was an avid runner, taking part in numerous marathons, half marathons and 5Ks throughout her life. Tanner Hedrick took up running in 2015 as a testament to his mother. “Whenever I didn’t feel like running, I would think about how my mother was unable to and I would go,” he said, “Running helped me get through the hardest time of my life. I felt closer to my mother when I was running and wanted to continue her legacy.”

Beverly Hedrick passed away on September 24, 2015 after battling cancer, but her memory lives on through her meaningful work at Mitchell Community College and in the community. She believed in the importance of adult education and was an advocate for the unemployed and underemployed. She began her career at Mitchell in 1992 as a part-time Basic Skills instructor and last served as the Director of Occupational Extension and Special Projects. Her leadership and passion instilled confidence and inspired students to achieve beyond their expectations. During her tenure, she was instrumental in securing funding to aid the unemployed and underemployed. “My mother beat cancer by the way she lived,” said Hedrick, “and the impact she had on the many people that loved her.”
