Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts (AFA) College Transfer Degree

Begin your art career at Mitchell Community College by earning an Associate in Fine Arts in Visual Arts degree. Our faculty are working to mold new creative thinkers, guiding students in the exploration of both traditional and contemporary mediums while working towards becoming a leader in the field of visual arts.

Through a study of art that emphasizes the past and the present, the personal and the universal, students will gain an insight into the visual arts as an essential part of the human experience. In the foundation courses, you will learn the basic elements and principles of art and technical skills that will prepare you to develop your own creative voice. Mitchell’s program stresses the application of aesthetic principles to enhance the creative process with the goal of making students fluent in a wide variety of media, technologies and modes of critical thinking and expression.

Mission: The mission of the A.F.A. Visual Arts program is to provide a strong foundation in the visual arts. Through this program, students acquire essential skills, vocabulary, and professional expertise, enabling them to foster personal growth and pursue a career in Fine Arts.

Upon successful completion of this degree program, graduates will be able to:

  • Demonstrate strong foundational skills in the visual arts.
  • Exhibit technical skill as well as the ability to incorporate concepts into studio practice.
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the history and evolution of the fields of art and design.
  • Prepare a portfolio for transfer, personal use, and/or career development.
