Course Descriptions

Clinical Medical Assistant Course (CCMA)**
This is a 176-hour course combining lecture and lab. This course includes: infection control, vital signs, anthropometric measurements, C.P.R., patient exam room set-up, various routes of medication administration, wound care, aseptic technique for clinical situations, phlebotomy, pulmonary function testing, and EKG monitoring. Prerequisites for this course: Must have successfully completed the Medical Office Administrative Staff Training Course - or - present proof of a minimum of 1-year experience in a medical office and a HS diploma or GED. Upon completion of this course, student will be eligible to take the NHA certification examination in Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). Medical Office Administrative Staff Training (MOAST)**
Entry level class to prepare students for the national certification exam: Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA). Content includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, billing and coding, EHR training, details of insurance, office practices and procedures and more.  This class is a prerequisite for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant class.  Prerequisites: HS Diploma/GED is required to sit for the certification exam.  Students will be responsible for two books purchased through the campus bookstore.

Medical Coding & Billing:  Basic**
Entry level with emphasis placed on Anatomy & Physiology.  Prerequisite: HS Diploma/GED.

Medical Coding & Billing Refresher
HS Diploma/GED, completion of Advanced Medical Coding or professional coding experience. Students should bring current ICD-10, CPT (AMA) and HCPCS II to the first day of class.

 Medical Scribe - Hybrid**
This 96-hour course is designed to train students to be a physician collaborator by focusing on data collection, documentation and assisting the physician with time-consuming electronic health record entries. Prerequisites: 1 year in a medical office or completion of the MOAST course; working knowledge of medical terminology and be able to type a minimum of 50 wpm. Thursday classes will be done online.

Medication Aide
Prepares individuals to work as a Medication Aide in a long term facility. Does not meet requirements for Assisted Living Facilities Med Tech positions. Prerequisite: HS Diploma/GED and current listing on the NC Nurse Aide Registry.

Nurse Assistant I**
Train to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Program has special registration requirements and class size is limited to 20 students per class. For requirements call (704) 878-4311.

Nurse Assistant l Hybrid** 
Train to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills for the elderly and other adults. Program has special registration requirements and class size is limited to 20 students per class. For requirements call (704) 878-4311.

Nurse Assistant Refresher** 
Review and prepare for the revised NA State Exam. Designed for students who let their NA I certification expire within the last 3 years. Call (704) 878-4311 for registration instructions.

Pharmacy Technician**
Trains individuals to work under the supervision of a pharmacist in a retail or hospital pharmacy setting. Students will be eligible to take the PTC Exam.  Prerequisites: High School Diploma/GED and TABE Math Test.  Registration cost does not include certification.

Phlebotomy**
This course provides theory and clinical experiences needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians.
